Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection

755 Silverado Trail N, Calistoga, CA 94515, USA

Part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, Solage is one of Calistoga’s top lodging options; the trio of overnight accommodations, spa, and Michelin-starred restaurant practically force guests to unwind and relax. The experience starts in the 89 studios and suites, which are built like stand-alone cabins and are furnished comfortably. Most have private patios; larger rooms and suites have private backyards (some even have sunken hot tubs); all have in-room showers lined with rocks that feel great on bare feet. With three geothermal pools, the on-site spa is second to none in the Napa Valley. The property’s signature treatment, dubbed the Mudslide, revolves around mineral-enriched mud that guests are encouraged to slather all over themselves and later incorporates a session in a soaking tub and time in a sound chair. Elsewhere on the property, at the Solbar restaurant, chef Massimo Falsini gives farm-fresh cooking a Mediterranean twist. The Monterey black cod in coconut-turmeric brodo is a crowd pleaser. Another must-order: the Macallan 18 butterscotch pudding, made with aged scotch.

Solage Calistoga

The sleepy town of Calistoga has long been known for its historic spa resorts—retro hotels whose hot springs are their biggest (and, in some cases, only) attraction. With its sleek, loft-meets-winebarn look and luxury sensibilities aimed at millennials, Solage turns that stereotype on its head. Its sprawling grounds—dotted with palm, olive, and oak trees, with views of the surrounding vineyards and Napa hills—are simultaneously private and communal. The secluded bungalows feel like romantic hideaways, while the center of the resort buzzes with wine-sipping bocce players and basking poolgoers. A Michelin-starred restaurant attracts discerning diners to both the dining room and the lively terrace lounge, an atmospherically lit patio where the cognoscenti gather well into the wee hours. The spa is so much more than hot springs—although, of course, it has those, too—boasting decadent and restorative treatments of all kinds, including those by celebrity skincare consultant Kate Somerville; the extensive gym and movement studio is worthy of its own wellness retreat, and, indeed, many a girls’ weekend has been spent between its yoga, Pilates, and body-sculpting aqua classes.

But, for all that it’s trendy and romantic, Solage also bends over backward for families—unlike many Napa Valley getaways—with its kids’ pool and outdoor play areas. Just another case of Solage defying expectations and redefining wine-country luxury.

The Pool at Solage

Swimming pools should be mandatory in a place with as many sunny days and awesome views as Napa Valley. Solage resort in Calistoga, on a vast swath of valley floor, has one of the very best. From the expansive pool deck and lounge area—where you can order from the Michelin-starred menu—soak up some rays with a bottle of bubbles or head to the spa for a mud bath or a soak in the locally sourced mineral water.
