Six Senses Douro Valley

Six Senses is known for top-tier, sustainability-focused resorts in far-flung locales like the Maldives but, in 2015, the Bangkok-based hospitality brand opened its first European resort in Portugal’s wine-producing Douro Valley. Housed in a 19th-century manor house with a terracotta-tiled roof, the property features a contemporary interior, outfitted in shades of muted gold, gray, and white. Set high on a hill, the 57 rooms, suites, and villas offer stunning views of rolling vineyards, lush forests, or the property’s courtyard. For what are undoubtedly the best vistas, choose one of the fifth-floor Quinta Panorama Suites, each with floor-to-ceiling windows that look straight onto the meandering Douro River. A wine cellar and library showcase the best of the region’s vintages, while three restaurants make use of vegetables and herbs harvested from the resort’s own organic garden. Apropos of a spa in wine country, nail treatments come with wine and cheese tastings, and scrubs and masks are individually blended with grapes, salts, herbs, and other natural ingredients.

Six Senses Douro Valley

The ecofriendly Six Senses brand debuted its first European property in July on 20 acres of vine-covered land overlooking the Douro River. Guests can geek out on port at the in-house Wine Library or indulge in a grape-based scrub at the 24,000-square-foot spa. A bottle of Portuguese wine is an essential souvenir, but guests should also consider purchasing a miniature donkey figurine made with wool and Portuguese clay. The indigenous Miranda donkey has been adopted as the hotel’s mascot, and 50 percent of profits from the sale of each replica is donated to a local rescue association that works to protect the endangered animal.

Six Senses Douro Valley

Six Senses is the premier luxury hotel in Douro Valley. This sustainable, eco-friendly property has all the bells and whistles one comes to expect from a luxury hotel. What makes this place truly special though? The food & beverage program. The food is incredible, many thanks to an amazing executive chef and a general manager who is nothing short of a foodie. The wine program is - obviously - nothing short of fabulous.
