The Hmong women of Sapa are a strange breed of delightful entrepreneurs, possessed of ridiculous amounts of guile, persistence and charm when it comes to flogging you the many trinkets they carry around with them. This diminutive hardy beauty let me photograph her (for a small fee) against the exquisite backdrop of the rivuletted hillside of terraces and her proud and beautiful face led me to name her the ‘Queen of Sapa.’ I wager that not a single soul has left the town of Sapa without a bag of colourful and fairly useless trinkets which they were cleverly manipulated into buying.

Sa pa Vietnam
A wicked sense of humor and a hard bargain.
“If you don’t buy something from me, I will die tomorrow,” the Hmong woman said with a straight face, “then my husband will marry someone else.” Caught off guard by the drama of this statement, I stared at her with a dumb, shocked expression until, sensing my distress, her face softened and a mischievous twinkle appeared in her eye. She seemed to take pity on me: “Okay that won’t happen,” she laughed,"but you will buy from me, okay?” Later I heard that the Hmong women, who live in Sapa among the foothills of the Himalayas, are known for their persistence and wicked sense of humor. This information came too little too late for me though...I was the proud new owner of several hand made blankets and scarves, stuffed into my tiny backpack.

On a mission in Sapa, Vietnam
This little boy captivated us on a recent tour of Vietnam. We were on a moped tour of the rice producing area of Sapa, Vietnam when we came across him walking on the rim of a rice paddy. He couldn’t have been more than 3 or 4 years of age and there was no one else around for miles. We voiced our concerns for his safety to the surprise of our guide; he couldn’t understand why we were worried. We drove off, leaving him on his mission and unknown destination.
