Feira de São Cristovão
What was born as a recreational area for hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Brazil’s northeast is now a hidden gem to visitors looking to get off the beaten tourist path. The densely-populated São Cristovão quarter is home to this enormous complex, open seven days a week, to which visitors can arrive at a reasonable hour and not get out before dawn. Afternoons are for shopping and noshing; the volume goes up after dark and the marketplace becomes a scenario for partying and live-music performances that are 100-proof Brazil. Authentic northeastern music known as forró goes until sun-up, at the same time impromptu local karaokes, also worth a look-see, pop up
