It may not be as widely known outside Guatemala as Tikal, but the Iximche Maya site was important in its own right. It was the capital of the Kaqchikel Maya for more than a half century before it was abandoned. Modern-day excavation of the site didn’t begin until the mid-20th century, but since then, Iximche has become important once more in Guatemalan cultural life, often serving as a site visited by foreign dignitaries. A guided tour will help you learn more about its history and significance.
