This year-round train connects Anchorage and Fairbanks to other cities in Alaska and offers amazing scenery from the comfort of a reclining seat. One of the more popular routes is the Glacier Discovery Train which takes in Turnagain Arm’s shoreline through the small towns of Girdwood and Portage and then the Chugach National Forest—the second-largest national forest in the United States—on its way to Whittier and Spencer. At Spencer, you can join a guided hike with a forest ranger to its namesake glacier. The train then climbs more than 300 meters in elevation through the Kenai Mountains to Grandview.
