Petit Goave, Haiti

When you think Haiti you don’t usually think of the beautiful beaches lined with coconut palms and sugar-white sand synonymous with every destination in the Caribbean. Bananier Beach, though, proves that you should. I was steered here by the folks at the Marriott Port-au-Prince, a hotel seemingly on a mission to showcase the sweet side of Haiti. Bananier lies 90 minutes south of Port-au-Prince near the town of Petit-Goave. The beach is accessible solely by boat, so there are very few residents. Those that do live here enjoy a quiet life of fishing and tending to the private vacation homes that line the beach. The family that hosted us provided everything you’d need for a full day of fun – food (full lunch and snacks), drinks, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, even fresh coconut water hand-picked from the soaring palms.
