Kotor’s Old Town is surrounded by extensive fortifications built into the steep, rocky mountainside, with the city walls forming an impressive 4-kilometer continuous loop. Perched at the very top, the 1,200-meter-high fortress of Saint Giovanni offers breathtaking panoramas over the bay and the Old Town. To get there, climb the 1,360 stairs from the Northern (River) Gate, resting halfway up by the 15th-century Our Lady of Remedy church, which was erected by survivors of the plague.
