Some say that the invention of balsamic vinegar was by accident; if that’s the case, Modena has long since stumbled upon the happiest of accidents. Touring Acetaia Villa San Donnino in Modena, Italy was as enlightening as it was delicious. A laborious process that takes place over numerous years (12-25 years to be exact), layers of intricate tradition and sizable portion of pride and delight that comes with a beautifully made product, is Italian through and through. A visit to Villa San Donnino is complete with an expansive presentation which includes comparative tastings and a sweet treat. The tasting is followed by a tour of the production, the beautiful grounds/vineyard and plenty of generously answered questions by their gracious and knowledgable team. The tour is free, but it is recommended to sign up for the tour ahead of time, and it starts promptly. The bottle of balsamic vinegar I brought home is by far my favorite souvenir of the entire trip.
