It seems appropriate when visiting wine country to stay in a hotel that celebrates wine. The Yeatman, in Porto, is set in Vila Nova de Gaia, the historical headquarters of the region's famous port wine houses. The hotel has 82 rooms and suites, some of which are sponsored by partner wineries. For example, the Graham's Port suite has light green walls and emerald green furnishings and is decorated with artifacts from the winery, while the Taylor's master suite has a bed set within a giant oak barrel.
The hotel has a wine cellar with more than 25,000 bottles and guests can attend wine classes or wine dinners at the excellent restaurant. I found myself gravitating to Dick's Bar most evenings. Named after Dick Yeatman, one of Taylor's top port producers, the bar is decorated in historic memorabilia and has an inviting terrace that overlooks the hotel's decanter-shaped infinity pool as well as the Douro River. If that view isn't relaxing enough, you can book a wine-inspired treatment at the hotel's Caudalie Vinotherapie spa.
