Further afield and across the border with Morocco is a remarkably well-preserved 8th-century village whose charming sun-bleached houses and buildings climb up a hillside. UNESCO has designated Tétouan an official World Heritage Site, noting: “Although one of the smallest of the Moroccan medinas, Tétouan is unquestionably the most complete and it has been largely untouched by subsequent outside influences.” An excursion to this ancient settlement takes about 45 minutes by road.
