The Troncalhada salina (salt pans) in Aveiro, Portugal is one of the salt pans that still operates in the area. The works are well run and fascinating. You can watch the worker as he scrapes the drying salt with his tools. He gathers it into a small pail when dry and adds it to the large mound. The mounds resemble pyramids glistening in the bright sun under the bright blue sky. You can amble around the pans (after asking) and the sea salt is available for you to purchase. The price at the site is quite a bit cheaper than in the stores. If you go to Aveiro don’t miss the chance to experience this fun adventure. If you take the boat tour the salt pans are on the itinerary.
