Why we love it: Mission Revival architecture with funky hang-ten highlights

Highlights:
- Sunset on the rooftop bar, serving fruit mojitos
- Just a minute’s walk away from the secluded Cress Street Beach
- Jet Set Pet packages that include toys and treats for puppers, as well as a waived $35/night pet fee

The review: Once the haunt of writers crafting deathless prose, this 1929 historic hotel on the Pacific Coast Highway also hosted a lobby backgammon game between J. Paul Getty and Howard Hughes. But it has moved on from that silver-screen glamour to a decidedly different sort of California cool, as ten of the 41 suites now celebrate surf culture.

The architecture maintains its original grace with Spanish-style stucco and domed arches. Some guest rooms reflect that Mission Revival feel with wrought iron accents and ornately carved dark-wood furnishings. Feeling a little more fancy-free? Book a Casa Surf Project stay and get ready for underwater photo murals, signed and hand-painted surfboards, and furniture by George Nelson, a 20th-century American Modernist industrial designer. La Casa del Camino collaborated with iconic skate and surf brands like Etnies, Roxy and Billabong to kit out each of these suites, adding street cred and contemporary swagger.

The hotel stands a stone’s throw from chill Cress Street Beach and its resort fee includes access of chairs, umbrellas and beach towels there, based on availability. Guests can also use the nearby Art of Fitness gym, complete with a swanky juice bar, so you can check that one off your SoCal bingo card! Afterwards retire to Casa del Camino’s rooftop bar, where the fruit mojitos flow freely (mango is a fan favorite). Feeling spicy? Go for the Jalapeñobusiness with chili-infused Patron Silver, agave, fresh lemon juice topped with ginger beer and a splash of bitters. Or toast the setting sun with a Tropic Like It’s Hot, a blend of Bacardi, coconut rum and muddled limes, brightened by a kiss of cranberry juice.
