Located on the campus of the Israel Museum, the Shrine of the Book was built to contain the Dead Sea Scrolls, written between the 3rd century B.C.E. and the 1st century C.E. and discovered by archaeologists from 1946 to 1956. The shrine is a dramatic, mid-20th-century monument with a bright white dome that contains the scrolls and other ancient manuscripts. Located on another museum campus, Yad Vashem is Israel’s main Holocaust remembrance and education center. Housed in a long crystalline building completed in 2005, the museum is designed to evoke the powerful emotions connected to the Holocaust with striking architectural effects.
