Many colorful characters of Beaufort’s 300 year old history rest here under a canopy of dignified, gnarled old oak trees. Stories abound, one of them of a young girl dying on a home bound ship, who continued her fatal journey in a rum keg. Once back in Beaufort, she was buried in it. Local children pay their respects to this day, by leaving toys for her on her grave. It’s a visually arresting, somewhat jumbled cemetery, which may stem from the fact that although it was deemed ‘fully occupied’, and closed by the General Assembly in 1825, the residents kept burying their own here until the early 1900s. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A great place to learn more is ‘Beaufort Historic Site'–led passionately by the incredibly charming, and wonderful Patricia Suggs. __________________________ A warm thank you: Travel provided by The Crystal Coast Tourism Authority (www.crystalcoastnc.org) and accommodations partner, Emerald Isle Realty (www.emeraldislerealty.com) #CaptureTheCoast #MyCrystalCoast”
