The largest Norwegian island south of the Arctic Circle marks the entrance to the Trondheimsfjord. Hitra is famous for its population of red deer, which are even featured on the island’s coat of arms. Underwater tunnels link Hitra and neighboring Frøya Island to the mainland, bringing a more modern lifestyle to the few thousand residents of these islands. A wind farm dominates the center of the island, while lonesome lighthouses including Børøyholmen and Terningen dot the coastline.
