During this spectacular ceremonial performance, local tribal elders engaged in song and dance dressed in rattan skirts, colorful clay paint, and massive headdresses made of human hair, bird of paradise feathers, grass and flowers. The men carried a haunting beat on their drums as they danced and sang, seemingly unaware of our group’s presence.
If you’re a seasoned traveler and looking for an experience way off the beaten path – and keen on glimpsing wholly unique and remarkable cultures – I encourage you to visit Papua New Guinea with Swain Destinations; Swain introduced us to the heart of PNG, and gave us an opportunity to actively participate in our own getaway.
Flash Parker traveled to Papua New Guinea courtesy of Tourism Papua New Guinea and Swain Destinations as part of AFAR’s partnership with The United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA), whose members provide travelers with unparalleled access, insider knowledge, and peace-of-mind to destinations across the globe.
