Pic la Selle

Pic la Selle, Haiti

As with any major journey in Haiti, you’ll want to get an early start on the road from Port-au-Prince to Jacmel. The storied center of art and culture along Haiti’s southern coast is a few hours drive from Haiti’s capital. On my most recent trip, we set off from the Marriott Port-au-Prince at 6:30am. Traffic was mostly light as we wound our way south. Eventually we came to a steep stretch of road winding well up into what I came to know as Massif de la Selle mountain. The highest peak in the Caribbean’s most famously mountainous country, Pic la Selle towers 8,793 feet above southern Haiti. Several lookout points along the road offer amazing views, particularly of the fertile north coast of Haiti’s southern region facing the Canal de la Gonâve. It’s impossible not to marvel at the rich landscape below and consider just how far Haiti can go.
