Kerikeri Mission Station
Two of New Zealand’s oldest buildings—Kemp House, built in 1822, and the Stone Store, added in 1832—are located at this historic mission station, where Maori chiefs invited European traders and missionaries to live among the indigenous people. Guides tell tales of the often-tempestuous relations among sailors, missionaries and local Maori, while the Stone Store, built from local sandstone and volcanic rock, sells New Zealand–made merchandise, some of it reflective of the era of the two buildings.
