Maddy Crowell

Maddy Crowell is a freelance journalist based in New York City whose work has appeared in Harper’s, The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Point, VQR, The Atavist, and Lapham’s Quarterly. Her reporting has been supported by the Overseas Press Club, the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, Heinrich Böll Stiftung, Round Earth Media, and the Fund for Investigative Journalism.

Her article “The Great Divide” was featured in Best American Travel Writing 2019. In 2020, she was co-recipient of NYU’s Reporting Award, and she is a two-time Livingston Award finalist in international and national reporting as well as a National Magazine Award finalist in Profile Writing.

She studied political philosophy at Carleton College and earned an M.A. in politics from Columbia University. She loves railways, maps, and far-flung places.
