Learn about the history of early New Zealand settlers, both Maori and European, at this museum set in a collection of varied colonial buildings. Exhibits include 19th-century flutes, firearms dating back to 1620 and an extensive collection of waka canoes and blacksmithing equipment. The museum, which was founded by a descendant of an original settler, is on the site of the former Okains Bay Dairy Factory and is an hour from Christchurch and about 30 minutes from Akaroa.
