Two thousand years ago, the Roman emperor Augustus built the Via Julia Augusta from Rome to the recently conquered Riviera. The highest point along the road lies in La Turbie where the Emperor erected La Trophée d’Auguste, a monument celebrating his domination over the region while taking advantage of the militarily strategic views. Much was destroyed by order of Louis XIV, who feared the site could be used by his enemies as a fortress, but several columns stand today.
