Borgarfjörður Estuary

You might not be able to pronounce the name, but you’ll long remember the jaw-dropping fjord landscapes in this isolated valley along the ocean’s edge in eastern Iceland, reached by a drive across the surprisingly (for this part of Iceland) forested Fljótsdalshérað plain. The Borgarfjörður region is the setting for many of Iceland’s famous sagas, and sites that are associated with various legends are around every corner here. Even if you don’t encounter any heroes or giants on a visit, you will likely spot puffins and other seabirds. Don’t leave without visiting the fishing village of Bakkagerði, a small hamlet of a few homes in the shadow of the hill known as Álfaborg—"elf city.”
