Arlington was part of the original 100 square miles set aside in 1791 to become Washington, D.C., only to be ceded back to Virginia in 1846. Today, this 26 square mile Washington, D.C. suburb is best known as home to Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon and its 9/11 Memorial, the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the Air Force Memorial. Pedestrian, bike, and subway-friendly, it is also known for its urban villages, school system, restaurants, and a growing performing and visual arts scene.
