The Beauty of Sand
Collected by Julee K., AFAR Local Expert
I love nothing more than sinking my toes into sand - especially at the beach. But before I started traveling, I only knew it to be in two color shades - either *beach white* or *desert orange" and except for small dunes, it was flat and patternless. These highlights show how beautiful sand can be. Mother Nature is a brilliant artist!
Minutes after we departed, our balloon climbed to an altitude where we could view the ever-expansive Namib Sand Sea. Our pilot, Dennis, was the son of the founder of Namib Sky Balloons and had grown up on farm we flew over moments after our...
700 Sandhills Rd, Kaitaia 0441, New Zealand
The tide out, it's hard to remember if I have ever seen so much neatly and naturally manicured sand stretch so far before. New Zealand has a knack for showing off so much pure beauty in nature, and this visit to Ninety Mile Beach was no exception....
New Mexico, USA
Of course I am only kidding. Another stop along the DART - although this one won't be disappearing anytime soon. This picnic area is located in the white sands national monument in NM. The glistening white sand is gypsum and you would swear you...
Valle de La Luna, Copiapó, Región de Atacama, Chile
I love the peace and quiet of the desert, especially Valle de la Muerte. I would rent a bicycle and ride 4 or 5km to Valle de la Muerte in the morning. I'd have the place to myself, to climb sand dunes, hike, eat Dona Martita's delicious tamales,...
Namib-Naukluft National Park,, Sesriem, Namibia
Wind, fire and water fashioned these dunes over millions of years, forming peaks up to 1,000 feet. Seasonal winds carried sand westward from the Kalahari desert, while the Benguela current from South Africa’s shores blew in sand off the Atlantic...
12500 Sand Dune Road, Kanab, UT 84741, USA
Just a stone’s throw from the Arizona border, the eponymous main draw at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is the result of rose-hued Navajo sandstone eroding over time. Like any dunes, the ones here constantly shift under the wind’s...
New Mexico, USA
Located just outside Alamogordo, New Mexico, White Sands National Monument is one of the most beautiful places to watch a sunrise or sunset in the U.S. The combination of a desert sky and pure white sand makes the most striking images. If there...
Black Sand Beach, California, USA
We began our walk up the Lost Coast Trail by enjoying Black Sands Beach, which doesn't really have very much sand, in the Kings Range National Conservation Area. For the next 24 miles from Black Sands Beach, the Lost Coast Trail is primarily on...
Al Farafra - Al Wahat, Al Farafrah, New Valley Governorate, Egypt
When you find yourself in the middle of a desert trying to flag down a camel caravan for help, you’re obviously in a bit of a predicament. That’s the situation my wife and I found ourselves in when our guide’s Land Cruiser broke down in a rather...
Disi, Aqaba, Wadi Rum, Jordan
Everyone I met in Jordan was engaging, interesting and polite, including the children. If you find yourself in an old bedouin town, make sure to engage with the kids, who often speak english better than adults. Here they're playing with an...
