Exploring the Veneto Region of Italy
Collected by Murissa Shalapata, AFAR Local Expert
Experience the best art and views Italy has to offer by exploring the small towns of the Veneto region, once ruled by the large Venetian empire. Keep an eye out for architectural similarities in the town centers. This list goes in order of my itinerary—3 nights in Venice, 2 nights in Vicenza, and 5 weeks in Verona—as we took day trips by train both within the Veneto and outside the region as far as Tuscany. Feel free to let it inspire your next trip to Italy.
Dorsoduro, 701-704, 30123 Venezia VE, Italy
There's plenty of art in Venice, from the churches to the Scuoli to the Accademia. But when you just can't look at another Caravaggio, and even Titian hair doesn't move you any more, refresh yourself with a visit to Peggy's house. The renowned...
Giudecca, 810, 30133 Venezia VE, Italy
In Venice, it's hard to get a moment alone with a loved one or even with the city herself. The crowds of tourists reaching over your shoulder to snap shaky photos of the aged Rialto can become a nuisance as you try to realize the historical...
30126 Lido, Metropolitan City of Venice, Italy
When the weather is warm off the coast of Italia, everything is right in the world. Spending a summer studying in Venice was a spectacular experience, and the weekend trips to Lido Island made my time there all the more "Euro." We passed the time...
Viale Battaglione Val Leogra, 44, 36100 Vicenza VI, Italy
I found that I preferred the small towns of Italy as opposed to the vast city of Rome. Vicenza was no exception. This charming town offers a plethora of options for history, art, and architecture lovers. The Teatro Olimpico: Designed by Andrea...
Via della Rotonda, 45, 36100 Vicenza VI, Italy
One of the best “strolls” I have ever had the privilege to take was in Vicenza, Italy. Actually, to be more specific, it was from the centre of town up into the hills over looking Vicenza. Hiking up steps is a requirement to reach the various...
Piazza del Santo, 11, 35123 Padova PD, Italy
This massive church was one of the most impressive in size, architecture, and collection of relics—for the art that is within and surrounding the building. Before you head inside, almost as an afterthought hidden in between kiosks selling St....
Piazza Sordello, 15, 46100 Mantova MN, Italy
In Piazza Sordello, right before the entrance of the Palazzo Ducale, there is a market that is not your typical Italian foodie epicentre for all things cheese, bread, and flowers. Instead the market took a more holistic approach offering yoga,...
Piazza Eremitani, 8, 35121 Padova PD, Italy
Built in 1307, Giotto's Arena Chapel, aka Scorvegni Chapel, should not be missed when visiting the Veneto. In Padua, it is often overlooked, which can mean smaller crowds during certain times and seasons. After a video in English and Italian...
36015 Schio, Province of Vicenza, Italy
During my cycling trip in North Italy, I visited Schio, a little town at the foot of the Alps. Since I'd never heard about it before, I didn't know what to expect. But it left me speechless. Stone paved streets, old style houses, little coffee...
Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, 37/39, 36100 Vicenza VI, Italy
The Palazzo Chiericati was designed by Andrea Palladio and was meant to be a home for the powerful and popular Chiericati family who lived in the Veneto region of Italy. The Palazzo's construction began in 1550 but was not completed until 1680....
Corso Castelvecchio, 2, 37121 Verona VR, Italy
As a westerner I had a hard time remembering and overcoming the fact that in Italy you can buy a bottle of delicious Bardolino red for 3 Euros, head to your nearest church steps or attraction of choice, and close the evening in the company of...
Stradone S. Fermo, 37121 Verona VR, Italy
When you enter this church you immediately know what sets it apart—its wooden hulled ceiling and unique details scattered throughout the church, from those who are buried within the floors and walls to the frescoes and Bishop's speaking altar....
