Exploring Normandy with AmaWaterways

Map View
Fall 2016 took me on my second, unforgettable AmaWaterways river cruise. Although late in the season, the fall colors were beyond spectacular, almost technicolor, and the weather just perfect. Even the foggy mornings (that we photographers LOVE so much) turned into happy sunny days. Sailing down (or up) a river has become one of my favorite ways to travel. It's slow travel at its best, with enough quiet time to let it all sink in. Thank you AmaWaterways.
Save Place
It's an invigorating 15 minute hike up the hill, from the river towards Château-Gaillard, the castle that Richard The Lion Heart built between 1196 and 1198. If you don't have time to make your way all the way up to the ruins, there's a look-out...

Les Jourdains, 14130 Le Breuil-en-Auge, France
Normandy is famous for its butter, cream and delicious cheeses, such as Camembert, Livarot, Pont-l'Évêque. Among connoisseurs it is also known for the omnipotent Calvados, a 'high-voltage' brandy made from local apples. Château du Breuil, one of...

d 268, 14100 Saint-Germain-de-Livet, France
Château Saint-Germain-de-Livet is located in the midst of Normandy's lush, rolling hills, about 10 mins outside of the town of Lisieux. Visiting the castle was one of the highlights of our day tour through the Pays d'Auge. It is picture perfect,...

186 Rue Martainville, 76000 Rouen, France
Aître de Saint-Maclou (the ossuary of Sant Maclou) is eerie and beautiful all at once, especially when visited early on a foggy, dark morning. Aside from Rouen's soaring cathedral, it is one of my favorite, albeit quite ghostly, landmarks of the...

My favorite excursions in new areas are often by bike; transportation that is fast enough to cover ground, and slow enough to take it all in. Fred Ollivier, our guide for the adventure, conveniently picked us up right where our ship was docked and...

Rouen, France
At the end of a fun bike tour through foggy, and sleepy Rouen on a Sunday, we happened upon the farmer's market. Right in the midst of it, an oyster bar caught our eyes. Having worked up quite the appetite pedaling around town, we plunked down to...

Château de Bizy, 27200 Vernon, France
A visit to Château de Bizy can be a beautiful, quiet antidote to the spectacular, but heavily overrun Monet gardens on the other side of the river Seine. Château de Bizy was originally built in 1675 by Michel-André Jubert de Bouville, and...

Vernon, France
Walking around the small town of Vernon, I came across this gem of a vintage fashion store. Anna (Anaïs) Vicente, the store's lovely owner and her Dachshund Elvis, present a collection of select shoes and boots, accessories (stunning silk scarves...

95430 Auvers-sur-Oise, France
The Ravoux Inn (also known as the Maison de Van Gogh) is located in the town of Auvers-sur-Oise, just north of Paris. When Vincent van Gogh lived there for just 3.50 francs a day, Auvers-sur-Oise was already a picturesque village attracting...

95430 Auvers-sur-Oise, France
From the Ravoux Inn, where Vincent Van Gogh lived the past 2 months of his life, it's a short walk to the cemetery where he was buried. On the way, we came across a number of signs, that showed Van Gogh's final paintings in front of their original...
