Experience the Green Season in Siem Reap

Most travelers to Siem Reap visit during the cool, dry high season, from late November through end of February, when it gets incredibly crowded, and after that, during the hot dry months of March and April. I like to encourage people to visit during our 'green season' or wet season and the monsoon months of May to November. The rain is unpredictable. It doesn't rain like clockwork in the late afternoons. But this is what the Tropics are meant to be like and it's incredibly gorgeous and green.

For those of us who live in the Tropics, the regular rains that arrive with the wet season is a big part of what life here is all about. The five months of dry weather seem all too short, and strange for their brevity, from the blissfully cool...

One of the reasons I love the monsoon or wet season in Siem Reap is because it's the time of year when the rice paddies come alive with activity. Rice farming families and neighbors help each other to plant the rice to get the job done as quickly...

During Siem Reap's monsoonal 'green season' from May to November, the endearingly dilapidated, moss-dappled temple of Beng Mealea appears even greener than ever. It's still essential to go early -- if possible, rise in the darkness to be there for...

There's only one thing better than driving or cycling through the drenched Siem Reap countryside after a month of monsoon rains and that's seeing the sodden landscapes from the air. Sure, you'll get a short glimpse on your plane's descent into...

Mount Kulen, Phnom Kulen in Khmer, is a rugged mountain plateau northeast of Siem Reap that makes a great day trip any time of year, however, I love to visit during the monsoon. Most visitors to Kulen see the River of a Thousand Lingas, the...

I reached Beng Mealea, one of the less-visited temples, in the throws of a late afternoon downpour. When I walked in, I encountered a group of local boys, taking shelter from the storm, eating lollipops and chasing a bat with a slingshot and...

Beyond Unique Escapes is arguably Siem Reap's best tour company, offering an array of excellent tours to the temples and villages. If you only do one tour in Siem Reap, this is the one I recommend. I've done it a few times and it's one of my...
