When people visit the Seattle area, they usually gravitate to downtown Seattle. However, across Lake Washington from Seattle is the area known locally as the Eastside, which has evolved from a nondescript group of suburbs overshadowed by Microsoft into a vital area in its own right. "Eastside" generally means the towns of Bellevue, Kirkland, Issaquah, Newcastle, and Redmond. Below are some of my favorite haunts in this part of the world.

One of my favorite Eastside places to shop is the pan-Asian market Uwajimaya, conveniently located near downtown Bellevue. First stop is always the produce section where the veggies and fruits are high quality, reasonably priced, and artistically...

The Bellevue Goodwill is noted for quality goods dirt-cheap. Goodwill stores accept donations from the surrounding area & do not equalize among stores. In a wealthy town like Bellevue, this means the pickings are top notch. On a recent visit, I...
