Counter Culture: Delis Around the World
Collected by Caroline Eubanks, AFAR Local Expert
Delis are a special sort of place in every country, inviting diners to see the counters full of delicious ingredients ready to come together at a moment's notice. I've found that the Jewish delis are in a league all their own, although any will do when you're in need of a heaping plate of smoked meat.

While New York has its pastrami, Montréal is the home of smoked meat. (The preparation of both is similar: A beef brisket is cured in spices for a week, then hot-smoked and finally boiled before being served.) Though others may question the...

OK, we didn't exactly go far for dinner. We were staying in the Ace Hotel, just two doors down, but we were jet-lagged and hungry. We had seen many people hunched over enormous sandwiches through the window of this traditional-style deli at...

Every New Yorker knows Zabar's, an Upper West Side institution. The specialty food market was founded in the 1930s by Louis and Lillian Zabar; today's store is nearly a block long and serves 35,000 customers weekly. Bagels, lox, smoked fish,...

Despite multiple trips over countless years going to New York City, it wasn't until a year ago today that I encountered this sandwich — the one that left me drooling until I could enjoy it again. Katz's quickly went from a one-stop place for...

Saul's Restaurant & Deli serves many New York deli delights but nothing beats their pastrami! When you sit down you get a plate of pickles as you peruse the massive menu - if it is supposed to be in a deli it is on that menu. Have a diner...

It's not often that you find a real New York deli in the southern United States, but Bagelicious is just that. The Jewish bagel spot is covered in Yankees memorabilia and usually packed with the regulars. So what's good here? In one word:...

Even though it’s touted as a traditional New York city style delicatessen, this eat-in/take-out spot has a true hometown vibe. Everyone really does seem to know everybody. All food is fresh made and sandwiches are created as you request. Large...
