America's National Parks with Go Ahead Tours
Collected by Flash Parker, AFAR Ambassador
How can I accurately describe in words an adventure that takes me through five states, six national parks and a legendary Navajo tribal park, up and over desert mesas, deep into bottomless canyons, out into the rugged backcountry of the Mountain West, and through the very heart of the American Road Trip Experience? A lofty goal, to scribble prose about such an experience – an experience so grand that even photographs fail to capture its essential essence. That said, it sure is fun to try.
622 Canyon Rd, Santa Fe, NM 87501, USA
Everyone who visits Santa Fe walks along the famed Canyon Road. Originating as an old footpath that once accessed water, it now primarily showcases an expansive range of shops and galleries with Native American art and landscape paintings. A...
Santa Fe, NM, USA
Santa Fe is the country’s oldest capital city (founded in 1610 by Spanish colonists), yet its verve and vigor belie its age. The city’s architectural marvels – many of which are hundreds of years old, like St. Francis Cathedral, Palace of the...
Mesa Verde National Park, CO 81330, USA
Mesa Verde National Park is a remarkable place, and the Go Ahead park tour is a thrilling, informative showcase of ancestral Puebloan history. Our tour covered many of the park’s highlights, including the Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum, the...
Mile Marker 15, Mesa Verde National Park, CO 81330, USA
One of the questions I’m most often asked about my job is “where should I stay…” and I often reply with a “as close to the action as you can get.” Well, you can’t get much closer to the Mesa Verde experience than the Far View Lodge, a stay...
Oljato-Monument Valley, UT 84536, USA
Nuzzled up against the Arizona border about 100 miles west of Four Corners are some 30 square miles of the most iconic scenery in the American West. Monument Valley is one of those places that you’ll recognize as soon as you see...
This national park is centered along the spine plateau above Bryce Canyon, which drops to the east from the main park road. Along the road are numerous pull-offs for enjoying views down into the canyon, with its miles and miles of awe-inspiring...
147 Broadway, Salt Lake City, UT 84101, USA
We had one (all too brief, if you ask me) night in Salt Lake City after our day exploring Bryce Canyon National Park during our Go Ahead Tour. It was ‘round sundown by the time we checked into our hotel, so I took advantage of the pretty city...
Afton, WY 83110, USA
You never do know what you’ll find on the road – even right in your own backyard. Afton, Wyoming, is only a few hundred miles from my town of Sheridan, Wyoming, but this was my first visit to this beautiful little pocket of Wyoming’s southwest. I...
Bear Lake, United States
When on tour with Go Ahead, even the potty breaks are breathtaking. This is the great Bear Lake, straddling the borders of Idaho and Utah. We reached postcard-perfect Bear Lake by driving through Utah’s stunning Logan Valley, itself one of the...
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Wyoming 82190, USA
See proof that the idea behind national parks—preserving spectacular landscapes—has been successful at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. In 1871, William Henry Jackson took more than 100 photos with an 8x10 plate camera. (His photos...
Hayden Valley, Wyoming 82190, USA
I’m fortunate to live in Sheridan, Wyoming, and I have the opportunity to visit Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks a few times each year – and no matter how often I visit, I never get tired of scenes like this. Nowhere else I’ve ever been...
Wyoming rolled out their most impressive goodbye party on the final day of our remarkable Go Ahead National Parks tour. Meet Willow, an adult grizzly female, and her juvenile cub, post-lunch. During our free morning in Grand Teton, I was out...
