Since 1999 we have returned to Alaska a number of times. And each and every time this Great Land continues to amaze. We've cruised the Inside Passage and the Gulf of Alaska before. This time we visited the interior of Alaska, at the end of Summer. This is the time of the year, when the kids are back in school, the weather is mild and many cruise travelers take advantage of reduced rates just before every hotel, lodge, restaurant and gift shop shuts down for the winter. http://goo.gl/6QaG6N

Parks Hwy, Denali National Park and Preserve, AK, USA
Though the outing takes some advanced prep and plenty of gear (rain gear is a must), biking the road that runs into Denali National Park—or even just a short section of it—provides plenty of up-close-and-personal time in the park....

The bus and cruise tours all visit this Tlingit village park, but it is nonetheless one of the best places to gaze at totem poles, including the historic Abraham Lincoln and William Seward poles, and watch contemporary carvers at work. —Edward...

Jeff King has won the Iditarod four times I believe. His Husky Homestead is by Denali. The dogs are called Alaskan Huskies. They don't look like the breed we know as "Huskies". They pretty much look like anything and everything, but they sure like...

You can't help but be awed by what a glacier and a few thousand years can do to a landscape. As we hiked closer to Exit Glacier I become aware of the enormity of this sheet of ice that has carved out the valley and the river behind us. Signposts...

We were ready for some back country hiking near Denali when weather set in and we couldn't fly into the back side of Denali. We opted instead for putting down in the Kenai on a small lake where hiking was abundant and wildlife was plentiful. The...

There are not very many roads through the interior of Alaska, and even fewer rail lines. The main Alaska Railroad line runs from Seward, through Anchorage, to Fairbanks, through pristine Alaskan wilderness. Breathtaking views of Denali (Mount...

Ever smelled a bear? I have. I even have evidence! As our seaplane landed on the evergreen shoreline of Katmai NP in Alaska, we spotted the bears! A lone male plodded the beach. A mama rested on her haunches, small cubs rolling nearby. A juvenile...

Sitka was our first stop in The Last Frontier before venturing out on an Alaskan Dream Cruise of the Inside Passage. We arrived on an early morning flight from Seattle to a cloudless, 80-degree day in late June. The locals were abuzz since the...

When you live in Alaska, you can at times take things for granted. As a result, you might not get out and do as much as you would if you were just visiting. Same is true of a lot of places - for example, it's amazing how many people living in New...

Alaska holds a special place in my heart and mind. I had the opportunity to live there for 4 glorious months. This picture was my backyard. I'd recommend the East Glacier hike, TEMSCO Helicopter tour to the top, and white water rafting on the...

Every November, the world's largest congregation of bald eagles gathers 20 miles outside of Haines, Alaska, for an unusually large feast. The draw? Meaty, striped salmon spawning along the Chilkat River, which never freezes thanks to an upwelling...

My family went on a cruise from Seattle to various cities in Alaska. It was the most beautiful trip I've ever had the privilege to experience. I snapped this photo while strolling the decks as the sun was setting. I placed this highlight in Juneau...
