A Perfect Day in Vancouver
Collected by Nikki Bayley, AFAR Local Expert
A perfect day in Vancouver needs to take in all the things that make this city so wonderful. I'd start early with a run around the Seawall to Stanley Park to watch the sun rise over the mountains, and end the day bar-hopping Gastown and sipping craft cocktails. In between would be plenty of eating, some time on the water, a spot of shopping, and, if possible, enjoying a bird's-eye view of the landscape via a Helijet trip.

Vancouver’s most famous urban space, the thousand-acre Stanley Park, epitomizes everything that locals here love about the outdoors, and visitors have many ways to explore the expansive grounds. Hiking trails weave around totem poles and hemlock...

The market community at the Public Market really makes Granville Island a must-visit in Vancouver. The vibrant colors of the fruits and vegetables that aren't on the East Coast really stand out, especially on farmers market days. The market goes...
159 W Hastings St, Vancouver, BC V6B 1H5, Canada
This Whistler-based family bakery does extremely well at Vancouver farmer's markets, and finally opened up a downtown bakery on Hastings Street. This is particularly handy if you grab a sandwich at Meat & Bread around the corner, and want...

Like the name says: just braised or slow-roasted meats, served on ciabatta buns. They are known for their hand-carved porchetta, but I order the daily special—that is, if I can get there before 2 p.m. The restaurant is first come, first served, so...
45 Blood Alley Square, Vancouver, BC V6B 1C7, Canada
This little hideaway in a back alley, with its communal tables and chalkboard menus, is where I go with friends when we want to share snacks. They match wines to "tasting trios" selected from their cheese and charcuterie cellar. It’s best to let...
261 E 7th Ave, Vancouver, BC V5T 0B4, Canada
A departure from the familiar, tried-and-true brands of downtown Vancouver, the stores on this Mount Pleasant thoroughfare embrace an independent spirit. There are design boutiques selling eco-fashion labels and vintage furniture, funky record...
455 W Waterfront Rd, Vancouver, BC V6B 5E8, Canada
The first time I took a trip on Helijet I can remember whooping with excitement as we slowly hovered about ground and then –swoop! Off we went. It’s a thrilling way to travel over this most picturesque city and to get a birds' eye view of the...

Sure, in the summer there is absolutely no better place to be than on the patio at Joe Fortes, enjoying their lavish hospitality in their sun-trap garden in the heart of the city, but really, every smart Vancouverite knows, that Joe’s is great...

To try a taste of traditional UK-style tandoori, look no further than my beloved Soho Road truck which you’ll usually find outside the Vancouver City Centre Skytrain station. There’s nothing I don’t adore about this little black van that makes the...
3715 Main St, Vancouver, BC V5V 3N8, Canada
I adore this little boutique on Main Street that’s simply stuffed with gorgeously girly styles and flirty retro clothes. You can find plenty of Canadian designers here too, and there’s an especially good selection in the jewelry section. While you...
201 - 999 Canada Place, Canada, Vancouver, BC V6C 3E1, Canada
This is such a fun attraction and despite being only 8 minutes long (the rest of the time is taken up with a pre-show and boarding) it’s honestly worth the ticket price. FlyOver Canada is a virtual flight experience which takes you gliding from...

You’ll find me brunching here most weekends. There is nothing I don’t love about Forage! If I’m up earlier I’ll catch their ‘Hair of the Dog’ brunch special which runs from 9-10am and serves up a classic Benny with either a caesar, mimosa or beer...
350 Carrall St, Vancouver, BC V6B 2J3, Canada
Pidgin may be known for their deceptively simple East-meets-West Asian-inspired menu with a decidedly French edge, but their cocktails are all kinds of fantastic too, and in a casual but cool spot like this, it’s most fun to combine the two. Try...

Vancouver, BC, Canada
The city's very own mountain soars above the Downtown core, just 20 minutes drive away from town. If you're feeling active try the 'Grouse Grind', a punishing 2.9-kilometre trail up the face of Grouse Mountain, commonly referred to as “Mother...
1154 Robson St, Vancouver, BC V6E 1B2, Canada
There’s no better place than Vancouver to try a Vancouver cocktail, it’s the perfect pre-dinner sharpener, although it works rather well as an after-dinner treat too. It’s said to have been created at the Sylvia Hotel down on English Bay in the...
