A Local's Guide to the Okanagan Wine Region
Collected by Murissa Shalapata , AFAR Local Expert
The Northern tip of the Great Basin Desert cradles the Okanagan wine region of British Columbia, Canada. Because it is located in a desert the climate is unique with very hot summers and mild winters. The terroir, perched along Okanagan Lake, can produce the finicky pinot noir and, during the winters, yield icewine. It's where Canadians go to get away. The Okanagan is British Columbia's wine region and is host to the Wine Bloggers' Conference 2013.

At the local Pyramid Winery the pyramid itself is as much of a character as its owners. If you saw the Cypes family you would think them to be tree planters but really they are passionate vintners producing bio-dynamic wine and winning awards for...

One of my favourite restaurants in Kelowna is RauDZ (pronounced "rods") and provides locally sourced ingredients for both the dinner plate and the martini glass. The dinning room is always packed and with a first come first serve policy...

The cold Arctic air has finally arrived in British Columbia when the Arctic’s icy fingers turn the bulbous, sued flesh of left over grapes upon the vine into cold sugar pearls. However, the cold arrived later than expected for those wineries...

At the Big White Ski Resort there is more to do than ski and snowboard which is especially useful to know when you're not a skiing Canadian like myself. Instead of hitting the slopes there are snowshoe excursions, ice wall climbing, sledding with...

Not far from Kelowna driving along Lakeshore Drive and passing aging vines of lush with grapes for harvesting, sits the goats of the Camelis Alpine Goat Cheese Artisan. Exiting the vehicle you hear the playful singing of goats in the distance...

Alas! This year's Sugar Plum Fair, at the local Quail's Gate Winery, was devoid of the pirouetting snowflakes I had hoped for. Fortunately, there were ballerinas, wine, cheese and dessert. And even though I didn't get my way this year, the view...

Therapy Vineyards overlooks green vineyards of rolling hills that drop off with a thrust of caramel clay that disappears into the blue Okanagan Lake. The view itself could be therapy for any soul in need of inspiration and calm. But wine always...

Whether you want to pick the red juicy rubies or if you'd rather buy a box of sweet golden rainiers the Okanagan is the undisputed fruit producing champion of Canada. While Ontario may try to rival us there's just no getting around the fact that...
