Zuiderzee Museum, Enkhuizen, Holland
Dutch coastal history and culture comes alive at this unique museum an hour northwest of Amsterdam
, which shines a spotlight on traditional village life along the Zuiderzee. Featured on Avalon Waterways’ Tulips of Northern Holland sailings in 2018, the experience is spread over two sections: the Indoor Museum houses one of the world’s largest collections of wooden ships, as well as rotating exhibits drawing from the museum’s permanent stock of photographs, clothing, and decorative pieces. Hop on a quick ferry ride over to the Outdoor Museum to wander through 15 acres lined with historic buildings, from a church and mill to a fish-curing shed and family home, all culled from the surrounding fishing villages. Demonstrations on fishnet and rope-making and other traditional crafts add more color to the experience.
