While for a tourist, public holidays when things are closed means less shopping, for a traveler like me it means more local interaction. So, Gil and I get on a train to the Salt Cathedral in Zipaquira, about and hour and a half outside of the city. What a win!
People had grandma and grandpa with them (a strong sense of family everywhere), as well as toddlers. The train was an awesome entertainment experience with 3 roving bands, and dancing in the aisles.
The Salt Cathedral was gorgeous but is a definite marketing spin on a long abandoned salt mine. They simply put up crosses representing the Catholic stations of the cross, lit them well, and popped up lots of souvenir stands around. A fairly good walk underground and at the high elevation, a bit huffy for me to get out of. But I survived. Probably protected by all of the crosses, prayers, and faithful around me.
