Breathtaking view of Taroko Gorge from Zhuilu Cliffs
If you like hiking and are up for a little challenge, the Zhuilu Old Road (錐麓古道) hike in Taroko Gorge is for you.
Starting at Swallows Grotto, the trail takes you up the mountain and to the Zhuilu Cliffs, a 500-meter stretch across the cliffs to the most breathtaking view of Taroko Gorge.
The narrow trails are not for those afraid of heights. The trail itself is not difficult, just a tiring as the 2.5-kilometer climb to the cliff is straight uphill with a whole lot of stairs.
You can opt for the half trail (3.1 km to the top; 6.2 km round trip), which takes about 5 hours or so, or the entire trail 10 km which takes 5 to 7 hours (so people say). The half trail turns around at the end of the cliffs, which is the main highlight of the trail.
A permit is required for this hike and it is recommended that you apply for the permit online at least two weeks in advanced on the Taroko Gorge National Park website. A second permit is needed and can be applied for in person the morning of the hike at the police station at the Taroko Gorge Visitor Center or online at the National Police Agency's website.
