A Fishing Village Turned BohemianNot too long ago Zengcuoan Village (曾厝垵村) was just a quiet fishing village on the south side of Xiamen island. Then students and recent graduates from nearby Xiamen University started migrating there, opening up galleries, coffeeshops, and tattoo parlors. Today Zengcuoan is already a full-fledged destination, bustling with both students and tourists. Many of the true bohemians have already been pushed out by rising rents (the village's original inhabitants no longer need to rely on fishing for a living) but the village still retains some of its edge, especially at night when it takes on the role of Xiamen's alternative nightlife district.
Amidst the restaurants and independent shops selling books, trinkets, jewelry are a number of funky little coffeeshop-bars. A typical example is reggae-themed Solo Bar, complete with Bob Marley and cannabis motifs, and a selection of handmade cocktails. To reach Zengcuo'an Village, follow Huandao Road (环岛路) from Baicheng Beach and Hulishan Fortress about about two kilometers. The village is spread across many small lanes on the hillside to the left.
