Ancient Ruins in Cappadocia
On any tour of Cappadocia in central Turkey, you'll find ruins of cave homes, churches carved inside the cliffs, and outdoor museums like the famous one near Goreme. However, just a short bus ride away is another open air museum with far fewer tourists and trinket salesmen. Zelve is just south of Avanos and well worth a couple hours of time to explore the three valleys with myriad cave home ruins, painted and carved churches, wine making rooms and wheat grinding mills. At the far back of the third valley are the deepest and most intact cave dwellings, with many details indicating what life must have been like here a thousand years ago.
