South of Avanos, in the region of Cappadocia, there is an open air museum, not nearly as famous as Goreme nor as crowded. Where Goreme is famous for the incredibly well preserved frescos and paintings in the cave churches, Zelve is famous for its well preserved town. Featured are grain mills and wine pressing areas, some small churches and a mosque. In the third valley, you'll find deep and well constructed family homes, giving you a real sense of what life was like in this remote valley a thousand years ago. Many of the rock fronts have fallen and washed away, exposing the interior decorated walls and staircases. It is a time out of time, and well worth a couple hours visit.
