Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa
Already being touted as the continent’s most important art gallery, even before it opens in late 2017, the six-story MOCAA has a MOMA/Guggenheim feel to its design, built inside more than forty old grain silos that were left behind in the Cape Town harbor. (On top of this structure is the already-open six-story Silo Hotel, an exclusive property that belongs to the well-known local hotelier Liz Biden.) The museum, which was formed by a partnership between the V&A Waterfront and former Puma CEO Jochen Zeitz, will have the Zeitz Collection as its founding collection, will focus on collecting, preserving, researching and exhibiting cutting-edge contemporary art from Africa and its Diaspora. Over one hundred galleries will be dedicated to a permanent collection; temporary exhibitions; and centers for art education, photography, the moving image and the Costume Institute, among other things.
