Zdar Nad Sazavou

The city of Zdar Nad Sazavou is found in the Czech Republic’s central Vysocina region, which could easily be “Santini country.” It features the most spellbinding works of Jan Blazej Santini Aichel, the leading Czech Baroque architect. First, head to the former Cistercian Monastery turned Chateau for some background on the architect. It was here where he made his first mark on the city. Then head over the Baroque bridge and up to the Pilgrimage Church of St. John of Nepomuk atop Zelena Hora on the Green Mountain. Prepare to be stunned and even star struck. The building’s distinctive layout mixes the motif of the number five with references to other Christian and Kabbala symbols. It’s unlike any church you’ve seen.
