Uchu Cafe (宇宙カフェ)

4 Chome-13 Jingumae, Shibuya, Tokyo 150-0001, Japan

When I stumbled upon a pristine vintage Airstream trailer in a tiny lot in one of Tokyo’s most expensive neighborhoods, I had no idea what would be inside. I was amazed to find a gem of a café, ironically called Uchu (Space) Café. With no more than three tables and a tiny service counter, the interior resembles a cross between something out of Woody Allen’s Sleeper and the inside of Carl Sagan’s camper—had he lived long enough to take a cross-country road trip in an RV. There’s a telescope aimed at a hanging plastic toy Saturn along with colored lights and glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling. And then there’s the trippy music that sounds like it’s from an episode of Star Gazers with Jack Horkheimer. Take a seat and enjoy the atmosphere while sipping a caramel macchiato, or maybe scarfing down a plate of Japanese curry or baked fish.
