I hit the vending machine jackpot on a cold morning last winter while waiting for a connecting train at Yokohama Station. Banana-flavored hot chocolate sounds iffy, right? But in Japan, you just have to take a leap of faith sometimes. I swiped my train card, pressed the electronic display, twisted the hot aluminum bottle's cap and ... mmmmmmm. So delicious.
Another winter favorite is Canada Dry's hot ginger ale. They changed the recipe slightly to bring out the cidery goodness.
I have not been so brave with cans of warm red bean soup or sweet corn chowder. Maybe next winter.
Most products are pretty obvious to English speakers. There's always water, hot and cold green tea, and any number of very sweet coffees. Red means hot, blue means cold. Labels hint at the flavors: lemon, apple, peach. But sometimes you just have to take a gamble.
