"I like to boogie while I work! Can you boogie with me?" This is how Classie Parker begins her joyful canning classes in the lush community garden she helped create in Harlem, New York. She's a master gardner and enthusiastic teacher who shares her expertise with all sorts of folks.
I joined a group of NYU students on a crisp, fall day at the 121st St. space for one of Ms. Classie's marvelous sessions. After introducing us to the history and the techniques of preserving vegetables and fruit, she gave each of us our our turn at the process. Despite our city-slicker ways, we quickly got the hang of the procedure, and we had a terrific time doing it.
When the course came to a close, she fed us some of her own tasty handiwork, and I for one fell madly in love with her blueberry jam. In addition to leaving with a jar of our own preserves, we boogied and giggled our way back home.
Taking a class with Classie with give you a real taste of New York!
