Designer Rifat Özbek, who moved from Turkey to London in the 1970s, became famous a decade later with his daring, ethnically inspired fashions for women. His newest venture, a collaboration with fellow designer Erdal Karaman in one of Istanbul’s most haute shopping districts, takes a more traditional turn. At Yastik (the Turkish word for cushion), the simple geometry and striking patterns of hand-woven textiles and antique fabrics are shown to maximum effect in a minimalist white store. When a work of design is as stunning as one of Özbek’s cushions, its elegance doesn’t require any help attracting attention.
