Hainan Island is unusual in China for playing host to a number of minorities. More than 90 percent of China's population is Han Chinese. In fact, almost 20 percent of the world's population is Han Chinese!
One of the smaller minority groups in Blue Bay is the Dan people. They make their living by fishing and live on their boats. Before the 1950s, they were persecuted, not even allowed to wear shoes if they came ashore to the mainland.
Around Nanwan Monkey Island, not far from the Westin Blue Bay, you can visit Xincun Floating Village. The residents are all Dan minorities. Due to their nomadic lifestyle, many Chinese people refer to them as China's "Gypsies of the Sea."
