China's Most Beautiful University, and Its Marvelous Tunnel of Art
Xiamen University (厦门大学), founded in 1921 by overseas Chinese benefactor Tan Kah Kee, is renowned throughout China as "the country's most beautiful university." Strolling through Xia Da's (as it's colloquially called) lush tree-lined avenues, around its lake, and amongst its buildings blending eastern and western architectural styles, it's not hard to see why. Don't expect a quiet stroll, though; Xia Da is often swarmed with Chinese tourists. Entry to the campus is open to the public, but you may need to register with your passport. The main entrance is at 422 Siming South Road (思明南路422号).
Don't miss Xia Da's enchanting "Tunnel of Art," the entrance of which is near the cafeteria on the eastern edge of campus. This pedestrian tunnel under the university's botanical gardens is lined with student artwork from one end to the other, more than one kilometer of art in all! The murals span every genre, with graffiti-esque designs and cartoons particularly popular. Several of the murals commemorate different graduating classes and departments.
