World Heritage Rock Art Centre - Alta Museum
Experience a seldom seen side of the arctic with a trip to the Alta Museum. Surrounded by unspoiled arctic scenery and pine forests, the Alta Museum explores the unique culture of the indigenous Sami people through exhibits and prehistoric rock carvings. Excavations in the 20th century revealed humans have lived in this seemingly inhospitable part of the world since the Stone Age. The museum chronicles how humans have survived here, from their hunter-gatherer past all the way up to the Sami reindeer herders of today.
