Woodfjord Svalbard Svalbard and Jan Mayen

In a national park at the northern tip of Spitsbergen, the Woodfjord stretches 64 kilometers (40 miles) inland where 1,310-meter-high (4,300-foot-high) peaks reign and polar bears roam. It’s a stunning sight in the Liefdefjord sidearm to witness the 40-meter-high (130-foot-high) Monaco glacier calve enormous amounts of ice. Graves of 17th-century whalers dot the land where flora such as the rare yellow-flowering whiplash saxifrage perseveres—despite the harsh conditions of this arctic desert—and fauna like ivory gulls and arctic terns roost.
